The UIP was launched in October 1977 with the aim of achieving a "free and independent Ulster". The establishment of the party followed the publication in May 1976 by the Ulster Independence movement of a document entitled Towards an Independent Ulster. This document claimed that an independent Northern Ireland would be an economically feasible political unit.
