synonyms: Progressive Democrats; PDs One of the smaller political parties in the Republic of Ireland it is more commonly referred to as the Progressive Democrats. The party was founded by Desmond O'Malley in 1985. Since its formation the party has been in government on three occasions (1989-92, 1997-2002 and 2002-present) as a junior coalition partner with Fianna Fáil (FF). O'Malley took part, on behalf of the Irish Government, in the Brooke-Mayhew talks during 1992.
