The Criminal Assets Bureau was established on the 15 October 1996 in the Republic of Ireland as a Statutory Body by the Criminal Assets Bureau Act (1996). The CAB forms part of the National Support Services Branch. The Bureau is staffed by officers from An Garda Síochána (Irish Police), Revenue Commissioners Taxes, Revenue Commissioners Customs and the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs. It is headed by the Chief Bureau Officer, who is a Chief Superintendent of An Garda Síochána, reporting to the Commissioner on the performance and functions of the Bureau. The CAB has also established a very close working relationship with the Assets Recovery Agency (ARA) in Belfast and London. The two agencies have worked closely together on a number of cases which have a cross-border dimension.
